50 years ago, in 1974, the dream of the marriage formed by Ricard L\u00f3pez and Magda Barcel\u00f3 became a reality. Bringing the design from other parts of the world to the people of Barcelona and giving voice to local brands in a unique space that soon became a reference in the world of furniture and decoration in the city. Thus, the store on Val\u00e8ncia street 1, the first of Pilma, was born.<\/p>\n
Throughout the following decades, Pilma has been enhancing its role as a catalyst for change and trendsetter, opening 4 more establishments, 3 in Barcelona and 1 in Madrid, some finalists in the FAD Interior Design Awards, and playing a prominent role in important moments such as the Barcelona ’92 Olympic Games, editing and exclusively marketing the Cobi mascot in aluminum, bronze, and resin.<\/p>\n

The opening of the store on Val\u00e8ncia Street marked a turning point in the recent history of the brand. Not only did it establish the foundations in the type of architecture and in the selection of products for the subsequent Pilma stores, but it also favored the transformation, led by Josep Baqu\u00e9s, of a logo created in the 1960s, combining the first parts of the names of Ricard’s mother (Pilar) and wife (Magda), into an iconic logo that has a prominent place in the Barcelona Design Museum. In 2021, this logo was revised, and its 5 letters were expanded into an alphabet, within a broader rebranding project awarded with 3 Laus Awards.<\/p>\n
Pilma is a family-owned company with four generations of history. Its origins date back to when Ricard began working with wood in the cabinetmaking shop that his father Domingo founded on Llan\u00e7a Street in Barcelona in 1929, 95 years ago. They were craftsmen who made custom cabinets with great respect and love for their craft.<\/p>\n

Since then, each family member has contributed to consolidating the brand, but the soul of Pilma, the dream of Ricard and Magda, has always remained intact with products of a distinctly minimalist, aesthetic, functional, and balanced design, reflected not only in furniture stores but also in Pilma Travel stores with travel suitcases that are part of the Group. A vision of socializing good design both inside and outside the home.<\/p>\n
In 2018, the Barcelona City Council awarded the Albert Gonz\u00e1lez Prize to Ricard L\u00f3pez for his contribution to the promotion and knowledge of the city’s commerce. A milestone that demonstrates recognition for a job well done, filling us with pride and giving us even more energy to look to the future with optimism.<\/p>\n

The first Pilma store opens at number 1, Carrer de Val\u00e8ncia. The aim is to make design more accessible, to bring products with clear functional and aesthetic value to the general public. As well as importing Scandinavian products and items by cutting-edge Italian companies, Pilma also supports local brands.<\/p>\n
The Pilma logo, designed by Josep Baqu\u00e9s in 1974 for the opening of the store, is a key piece of Catalan graphic design history and is kept as part of the permanent collection at the Design Museum of Barcelona.<\/p>\n

Its 2,000 m2 of retail space is split into four floors, which are connected by ramps that ensure easy access to all areas and offer an overall vision of the whole space.<\/p>\n

In the early \u201890s, Pilma creates its PLM Design line of furniture, consisting of products with sleek lines and rational, minimalist style in timeless designs. From the beginning, there is a clear desire to shun ever-changing trends and favour quality products with a unique personality and look.<\/p>\n
Pilma attends various trade fairs as an exhibitor and reaches agreements with leading international brands to represent them and distribute their products in Spain. To support this activity, Pilma opens a new 2,000 m2 logistics base near the Fira Barcelona convention centre in L\u2019Hospitalet de Llobregat.<\/p>\n
The Organising Committee for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona awards Pilma two exclusive licences to produce and market the mascot, Cobi, made from materials such as aluminium, bronze and resin.<\/p>\n

In 2007, Pilma returns to the place where it started out as a cabinetmaking workshop, on Carrer de Llan\u00e7\u00e0, to set up its offices, and turns the central warehouse in Eixample into an outlet with more than 1,000 m2 of retail space<\/p>\n
Thanks to Pilma\u2019s new logistics organisation, the central warehouse at Fira Barcelona is expanded to 5,000\u00a0m2.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Pilma opens a second space dedicated to the world of travel within the iconic store on Barcelona\u2019s Avinguda Diagonal, which is met with enthusiasm from the city\u2019s tourists.<\/p>\n
In 2016, Pilma launches a free interior design service for its clients, called Pilma Interiors, to help them to bring their projects to life.<\/p>\n
In 2017, Pilma opens its third Pilma Travel store on the most exclusive quay in Puerto Ban\u00fas, Marbella.<\/p>\n
In 2018, Barcelona City Council grants Ricardo L\u00f3pez Beltrol, the founder of Pilma, the Albert Gonz\u00e1lez Award for his contribution to the promotion and knowledge of commerce in the city.<\/p>\n
